Bringing Your Whole Self to Work: Why Faith and Business Belong Together

For the majority of my career, I believed in the corporate myth of the "Office Door".

The rule was simple. You could have your faith, your values, and your personal convictions, but you had to leave them in the parking lot. As I navigated my work and working relationships, I realized that keeping my faith private felt more disingenuous than professional. It felt like I couldn’t bring my ‘whole self to work’.

When we started BlueInc, however, we found a whole new world of entrepreneurs who were pairing their deep faith with their business abilities. And I thought, maybe there are just a few companies like that in the world

Turns out, I was wrong.

We recently came across an article in the Harvard Business Review which said “entrepreneurs spend more time praying than most people.” Not only that, they are also “more likely to believe in an engaged, responsive God who takes a personal interest in them.”

I guess the combination of faith and business ownership isn’t nearly as rare as I thought!

Business is hard. Whether it’s a supply chain crisis, a difficult HR situation, or a financial hurdle, there is constant pressure from all sides. When issues arise, our first instinct is often to rely on our own experience:

“I’ve seen this before. I know how to fix this. I don't need help.”

However, when we operate in "I've got this" mode, we’re cutting God out of the picture. We’re separating what say we believe on Sunday from our Monday to Friday assignments.

So, this week, identify the biggest "business fire" you are currently trying to put out. Instead of just fixing it the way that seems right to you, stop and ask God for help first.

Our experiences at BlueInc have made it clear to us that God doesn’t want to be a spectator in your career. He wants to be an active participant in your personal life, your faith life, and your business life.
