It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect — Take that First Step

A few years ago, we hosted a hands-on, immersive experience for 6 start-up founders working on early-stage businesses.
One specific founder showed up with a great idea. It solved a pain point in the market and people around him were enthusiastic.
There was just one issue:
He always needed to fix one more thing before he was ready to sell it.
Confidence Behind Closed Doors Doesn’t Always Translate to Sales
As we worked with him it became clear that the problem wasn’t the product — at least not entirely. Sure, it wasn’t fully mature yet but there was a bigger challenge:
👉 He didn’t really believe in it — not fully.
He second-guessed himself, hesitated, and even stumbled when it came time to ask someone to buy.
That’s something we see often with early-stage founders. It’s one thing to have a concept. It’s another thing entirely to have the conviction to sell it…especially when it’s still rough around the edges.
Fast-Forward to a Breakthrough
A couple of years later, he reached out.
He had a couple of big prospects on the line and wanted to talk strategy. We connected and worked through the approach.
After one of those meetings, we got a note from him:
“I got my first major client!”
He was excited. But even more than that, he was surprised.
He thought:
The product was still too early
It didn’t have enough features
The prototype was too buggy
It wasn’t ready for revenue
But he discovered something that every founder needs to learn:
People Don’t Buy Perfect. They Buy Solutions.
This client didn’t care that the product wasn’t flawless. They didn’t need every feature under the sun. They had a need right now — and he could meet it.
When you solve a real problem, people will bet on you — even if you’re not “done.”
That trust might come because they believe in you or because the pain they’re feeling is real and immediate....
...and the trust often comes long before the product is polished or the business is “ready.”
Progress Begins with Imperfect Action
There’s a saying you’ve heard before:

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
Cheesy? Maybe. But it's absolutely true.
This founder’s story is proof:
You don’t need every answer. You don’t need every feature. You need to start. Then learn. Then keep going.
Your Turn
What are you waiting to launch until it’s “ready”? What first step are you holding back on?
Let this be your reminder to:
Start where you are,
Sell what you’ve got, and
Grow as you go.
Businesses are built one step at a time so start walking!
