Running or Changing Your Business? Here’s How to Do Both Successfully

Writer: Johannes MutzkeJohannes Mutzke

When was the last time you had to remind your lungs to breathe? Or your heart to beat? How about your eyelids to blink? Okay, that last one wasn’t fair—we know you’re thinking about it now. What we’re saying is you don’t have to remind yourself to do these things. They just happen. Your brain takes care of it so you can focus on those other important things, like today’s Wordle or trying to remember the score of the Yankees game you were watching last night when you fell asleep.

Running your business

If you’re an entrepreneur, running your business might feel like one of those subconscious tasks. It’s not something you have to actively think about doing—it’s what happens naturally when you show up to work each day. But when you try to make changes? That’s when the whole thing gets a little shaky.

The only way to make a change in your business is if you want to make a change in your business. It starts with a desire. That’s what gives you energy and purpose. We can work with that.

Multitasking isn’t the answer

Once you have desire and you know what needs to change, that’s enough, right? As we all know, it’s hard to do two things at once and give each the attention it deserves. Go ahead, try it out. See if you can cook your breakfast while you’re still at the gym. Try showering while ironing your clothes. Or running on a treadmill while putting on your best gotta-close-that-deal shirt. Spoiler: you won’t be able to do it. That’s because you’re not focused. And to be focused, you need to be intentional.

Changing your business

Strategy is a process that runs parallel to your business–and, like anything else you do, you need a routine for it. It has to fit into your normal rhythms and allow you to step out of the day-to-day of running the business, giving you the space to work on change.

Routines can include things like off-site meetings, retreats, or a visioning session with your leadership team or stakeholders. The bigger the changes, the more time you need to make them happen, so plan accordingly.

Need help creating the process needed to enact meaningful change? Let’s talk!
